When the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system of a vehicle is turned off, this is referred to as turning "EGR off" on a vehicle's engine. The EGR system circulates some of the exhaust gases back into the combustion chamber in order to lower the amount of nitrogen oxides (NOx) that the engine produces.
